The Research University Alliance (RUA) is an NSF- Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) funded alliance of 9 universities (Caltech, Georgia Tech, Harvard, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCLA, University of Michigan, UT Austin, University of Washington). RUA works to increase diversity in the future professoriate by supporting postdocs through professional development, conferences, research exchange and the Postdoc Portal.
The Postdoc Portal (postdocportal.org) connects graduate students and postdocs from across the country who are considering a future postdoc position with faculty and research groups at the 9 RUA institutions who are open to hearing from potential postdocs. Portal users create a postdoc or research group profile which includes information about themselves and their research interests, as well as contact information. If research groups have a specific position available, they can also create a job posting. Portal users are automatically matched with other users based on shared research interests. Once matched users can decide to contact each other using the information found in their profiles. If interested, users can also browse the profiles on the Portal to find other postdocs in their field, research groups at a specific university or in a specific field.
The RUA supports the advancement of underrepresented graduate students to the postdoctoral level within the Alliance and to the nation’s faculty. The NSF-AGEP program defines underrepresented students and postdocs as: US citizens, permanent residents or US nationals who also belong to one or more of the following groups: African American, Hispanic/Chicanx/Latinx American, Native American, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander. RUA includes students and postdoctoral fellows from all groups whenever possible, and those who do not meet these NSF eligibility requirements are invited to contact the Postdoc Concierge for more information about possible participation. Eligible disciplines are Mathematics, Physical and Environmental Sciences and Engineering (MPESE).
